Creating Friction: Infrastructuring Civic Engagement in Everyday Life
This paper introduces the theoretical lens of the everyday to intersect and extend the emerging bodies of research on contestational design and infrastructures of civic engagement. Our analysis of social theories of everyday life suggests a design space that distinguishes âprivileged momentsâ of civic engagement from a more holistic understanding of the everyday as âproduct-residue.â We analyze various efforts that researchers have undertaken to design infrastructures of civic engagement along two axes: the everyday-ness of the engagement fostered (from âprivileged momentsâ to âproduct-residueâ) and the underlying paradigm of political participation (from consensus to contestation). Our analysis reveals the dearth and promise of infrastructures that create frictionâ provoking contestation through use that is embedded in the everyday life of citizens. Ultimately, this paper is a call to action for designers to create friction.

Der Titel meines Aufsatzes suggeriert die Geschichte eines Verlustes. Paradoxerweise ist es der Verlust von etwas, das die Menschheit nie besessen hat: den Tod. Dass diese metaphorische Rede dennoch sinnfÀllig ist, soll im Folgenden gezeigt werden. Dabei kann nicht auf kleinem Raum das reiche, von den Todeshistorikern aus den Archiven gehobene Datenmaterial noch einmal zusammengefasst werden
Spulenkonzepte zur schnellen und bewegungskompensierten MR-Bildgebung von Kleintieren
In dieser Arbeit wurden Hochfrequenzspulen fĂŒr die Bildgebung von Kleintieren an klinischen Ganzkörper-Magnetresonanztomographen entwickelt. Hierzu wurden zunĂ€chst Einkanal-Solenoidspulen konzipiert und charakterisiert. Die Solenoide hatten zwei bzw. drei Windungen, die doppelt ausgefĂŒhrt wurden, um eine bessere HomogenitĂ€t des Empfangsprofils zu erzielen. Diese Spulen ermöglichen die Akquisition von Ganzkörperaufnahmen von MĂ€usen mit hohem Signal-Rausch-VerhĂ€ltnis (SNR) und HomogenitĂ€t ĂŒber eine LĂ€nge von mindestens 6,3 cm. Da fĂŒr viele Bildgebungsexperimente eine schnelle Bildaufnahme essentiell ist, wurde im nĂ€chsten Schritt ein neuartiges Spulenkonzept entwickelt, welches durch seine Geometrie die parallele Bildgebung in beliebigen Raumrichtungen ermöglicht. Ein Prototyp wurde aufgebaut und durch Bildgebungsexperimente am Phantom und am Kleintier charakterisiert. Bei Beschleunigungsfaktoren von R = 2 wich das SNR in allen drei Raumrichtungen weniger als 1% vom theoretisch maximalen SNR ab. Zur Kompensation physiologischer Bewegungen durch das Selfgating-Verfahren, wird in dieser Arbeit erstmals eine Spule vorgestellt, die nur das Selfgating-Signal selektiv verstĂ€rkt und - durch Einsatz eines optischen Detuning-Verfahrens - gleichzeitig die homogene Ausleuchtung des Bildes erhĂ€lt. In-vivo-Messungen am Kleintier zeigen eine VerstĂ€rkung des Selfgating-Signals um mindestens 40%
LiteralitÀten im altsprachlichen Unterricht: Zur Bedeutung der Medienspezifik ausgewÀhlter Rezeptionsdokumente
Auf der Grundlage der LehrplĂ€ne der LĂ€nder ist die Arbeit mit Rezeptionsdokumenten aus SpĂ€tantike, Mittelalter und Neuzeit konstitutiver Bestandteil von altsprachlichem Unterricht. Die unterrichtliche Praxis degradiert jedoch die Dokumente, in denen Stoffe und Motive der Antike rezipiert werden, oftmals zu reinen Materiallieferanten, weil deren Medienspezifik nur ungenĂŒgend berĂŒcksichtigt wird. Deren BerĂŒcksichtigung erfordert vor allem die WĂŒrdigung ihrer FunktionalitĂ€t in ihrem kulturgeschichtlichen Kontext. Der Beitrag zeigt anhand von drei Beispielen unterschiedlicher MedialitĂ€t, wie LiteralitĂ€ten im altsprachlichen Unterricht hinsichtlich der AnsprĂŒche, welche etwa die New London Group fĂŒr den Umgang mit Multiliteracies fordert, angemessen berĂŒcksichtigt werden können. Ubc9 fusion-directed SUMOylation identifies constitutive and inducible SUMOylation
Constitutive and induced protein SUMOylation is involved in the regulation of a variety of cellular processes, such as regulation of gene expression and protein transport, and proceeds mainly in the nucleus of the cell. So far, several hundred SUMOylation targets have been identified, but presumably they represent only a part of the total of proteins which are regulated by SUMOylation. Here, we used the Ubc9 fusion-dependent SUMOylation system (UFDS) to screen for constitutive and induced SUMOylation of 46 randomly chosen proteins with proven or potential nuclear localization. Fourteen new UFDS-substrate proteins were identified of which eight could be demonstrated to be SUMOylated in a UFDS-independent manner in vivo. Of these, three were constitutively SUMOylated (FOS, CRSP9 and CDC37) while the remaining five substrates (CSNK2B, TAF10, HSF2BP, PSMC3 and DRG1) showed a stimulation-dependent SUMOylation induced by the MAP3 kinase MEKK1. Hence, UFDS is appropriate for the identification and characterization of constitutive and, more importantly, induced protein SUMOylation in vivo

Assessing agreement between preclinical magnetic resonance imaging and histology: An evaluation of their image qualities and quantitative results
One consequence of demographic change is the increasing demand for biocompatible materials for use in implants and prostheses. This is accompanied by a growing number of experimental animals because the interactions between new biomaterials and its host tissue have to be investigated. To evaluate novel materials and engineered tissues the use of nondestructive imaging modalities have been identified as a strategic priority. This provides the opportunity for studying interactions repeatedly with individual animals, along with the advantages of reduced biological variability and decreased number of laboratory animals. However, histological techniques are still the golden standard in preclinical biomaterial research. The present article demonstrates a detailed method comparison between histology and magnetic resonance imaging. This includes the presentation of their image qualities as well as the detailed statistical analysis for assessing agreement between quantitative measures. Exemplarily, the bony ingrowth of tissue engineered bone substitutes for treatment of a cleft-like maxillary bone defect has been evaluated. By using a graphical concordance analysis the mean difference between MRI results and histomorphometrical measures has been examined. The analysis revealed a slightly but significant bias in the case of the bone volume Ă°biasHisto MRI: Bonevolume = 2: 40 %, p < 0: 005) and a clearly significant deviation for the remaining defect width Ă°biasHisto MRI: Defectwidth = 6: 73 %, p 0: 005Ă: But the study although showed a considerable effect of the analyzed section position to the quantitative result. It could be proven, that the bias of the data sets was less originated due to the imaging modalities, but mainly on the evaluation of different slice positions.
